A good interface lets people ask their own questions of a dataset instead of prescribing a single conclusion.
From volume to understanding
Large datasets often become either inaccessible downloads or a handful of static charts. Interactive visualization can occupy the useful space between them: enough structure to orient someone, with enough freedom to let them follow an unexpected pattern.
The technical work matters here. Precomputation, formats, spatial indexing, and progressive detail determine whether an idea becomes a responsive product or a loading screen.
The Medicaid Dental Atlas and Outdegree approach very different datasets, but both are experiments in giving people a compact way to explore structure.
